Info for Dogs on Public Beach

We would like to remind all residents, guests, and visitors that dogs are NOT ALLOWED on the Newbury public beach between May 15 and September 15 between 8:30am to 5:30pm, even if they are on a leash (Town of Newbury Bylaw Chapter 46-6). This rule is in place, in part, to help protect sensitive shorebird populations, such as Piping Plovers and Least Terns, that nest on the Plum Island beaches.

The Town works with Mass Audubon to monitor these shorebirds throughout their nesting season. In 2021, Mass Audubon observed over 400 dogs on the beach. Dogs have also been observed chasing Piping Plovers. Please refrain from bringing dogs with you when visiting Newbury public beaches between May 15 and September 15, 8:30am to 5:30pm. See map below for public beach delineation.

These birds can be found all over Plum Island beaches, including on private property. For property owners with privately-owned beach areas, we encourage you to be aware of the locations of nesting sites of shorebirds and to prevent your dogs from disturbing the birds and nest sites (see below for nesting site maps). The more we can work with residents to protect these birds on both public and private beach areas, the more effectively we can do so. Spread the word, and help us to protect these sensitive species!

If you, your guests, or your renters have any questions, please reach out to the Conservation Agent via email (conscom@townofnewbury.org) or phone (978-465-0862, ext 310).
